National assembly

National assembly
After the Batavian Revolutionin 1795, the sovereignty of the traditional provinces merged into a unified state. The old States Generalwas replaced by a representative body, based on the French model, directly elected by men of at least 20 years of age who were neither paupers nor servants. The National Assembly met for the first time on 1 March 1796. Most of its powers were transferred to the executive by the constitution of 1801.
